Partner visa evidence

Partner visa relationship evidence: the four areas

When it assesses a partner or prospective marriage visa, the Department looks at your relationship across four areas set out in the Migration Regulations. Here they are in plain English, with the kinds of documents couples commonly provide. General information only, not advice about your case.

The four areas

Financial aspects

How you share money and financial responsibilities.

  • Joint bank accounts or cards
  • A shared lease, mortgage or property
  • Bills in both names
  • How you share everyday costs

Nature of the household

How you live together and run your home.

  • Documents showing the same address
  • How you share housework and responsibilities
  • Care of children, if any
  • Mail addressed to you both

Social aspects

How you are seen as a couple by the people around you.

  • Form 888 statements from people who know you
  • Travel and events together
  • Joint invitations and social media
  • Shared friends and activities

Nature of your commitment

Your commitment to a shared life together, to the exclusion of all others.

  • How long you've been together
  • Contact while you were apart
  • Plans you've made together
  • Knowledge of each other's background

The Department’s own pages list what to provide for each visa; check them for your subclass, or use our partner visa document checklist, which gathers them in one place. Form 888 statements are one part of the social aspects: see how to fill in Form 888, example answers and the ID evidence witnesses provide. Our Form 888 tool gets them done.
