Your partner visa relationship statement, in your own words

Short answer

For partner visas 820 and 309, Home Affairs asks the applicant to tell it in writing about the relationship: how, when and where you met, how it developed, moving in, engagement or marriage, what you do together, time apart, significant events and your plans for the future.

Our tool takes each of you through those topics with prompt questions. You write; we lay it out as a clean PDF to sign. AUD 19, or AUD 29 with the Form 888 kit.

What is a partner visa relationship statement?

It’s your own written account of your relationship, attached to your application with the rest of your evidence. On the 820 and 309 pages it sits under “Relationship history”. It is different from Form 888, which is a statement about you from a witness who knows you both.

What does Home Affairs ask the statement to cover?

Partner visas 820 and 309. The visa pages say: “Tell us in writing about”

  • how, when and where you first met
  • how the relationship developed
  • when you moved in together, got engaged or married
  • what you do together
  • time you spent apart
  • significant events in the relationship
  • your plans for the future.

Prospective Marriage visa 300. The 300 page asks for written statements showing the history of your relationship, such as how it developed, when you got engaged and your future plans as spouses. It also asks for evidence that you have met face to face as adults and that you intend to marry within 9 months and live together as spouses.

The household evidence list also mentions “a statement about how you share housework”, so the tool includes that as an optional section.

How does the relationship statement tool work?

  1. 1Set up your case once: both names and your visa. Choose the statements, or the statements and the Form 888 kit.
  2. 2Each of you opens your own private link and answers one topic at a time, with prompt questions and a fictional style example. It saves as you type.
  3. 3You review and approve your statement. Then you can preview both from your dashboard.
  4. 4Pay once, and your browser makes a PDF of each approved statement to print, sign and attach in ImmiAccount.

What does a relationship statement look like?

A short fictional extract, to show the level of detail: specific places, rough dates, what actually happened. Your statement is about your own relationship.

Fictional example · How the relationship developed · for style only, don’t copy
After a few weekend walks we started seeing each other most weeks. By September 2021 we called ourselves a couple, and in December Alex came to Christmas lunch with my family. In March 2022 we spent a week in Tasmania, our first trip together.

What should you check before approving it?

  • Dates and places match your other documents: leases, bills, travel records and your witnesses’ Form 888s.
  • Names are spelled as on your passports.
  • Everything is true and in your own words. Don’t copy wording from examples, templates or each other.
  • Each topic has an answer, even a short one such as “We haven’t spent time apart.”

Your witnesses write their own Form 888s separately, from what they have seen themselves. See the Form 888 example answers and the partner visa document checklist.

What do you get, and what does it cost?

  • A guided questionnaire for each of you, private to its writer
  • The topics Home Affairs lists for your visa, with prompts and fictional style examples
  • A preview of both statements before you pay
  • A clean PDF of each approved statement, ready to sign and attach in ImmiAccount

AUD 19 for both statements, or AUD 29 together with the Form 888 kit (instead of AUD 38). GST included where it applies. You pay only after previewing a submitted statement.

What about stage 2 (801)?

At the permanent stage, the 801 page asks for a Commonwealth statutory declaration completed by your sponsor about your relationship, which must be witnessed. That is a different document, and our tool doesn’t make it. See when a partner visa needs a statutory declaration.

Questions

Do you write the relationship statement for us?

No. Each of you answers guided questions and every sentence is your own. The tool shows the topics Home Affairs lists, prompt questions and clearly labelled fictional examples, then lays your approved words out as a PDF. It never writes, suggests or changes relationship content.

Is a partner visa relationship statement a statutory declaration?

Not for stage 1. The 820 and 309 pages ask you to tell Home Affairs in writing about your relationship history; they don't ask for a statutory declaration for it. At stage 2 (801), the 801 page asks for a Commonwealth statutory declaration completed by your sponsor, which must be witnessed. Our tool doesn't make statutory declarations.

Do both partners need to write one?

The 820 and 309 pages ask the applicant to tell Home Affairs in writing about the relationship history; the sponsor's part of those pages doesn't list a separate statement. Many couples still choose to write one each, so the tool gives each of you your own questionnaire and PDF. If you're unsure what your application needs, ask a registered migration agent or lawyer.

How long should a relationship statement be?

Home Affairs' visa pages don't set a length. They list topics, so cover each one with real details: places, rough dates and what happened. Short answers are fine where there's little to say.

What does it cost?

AUD 19 for both partners' statements, or AUD 29 together with the Form 888 kit for your witnesses. If you already have one, adding the other costs AUD 10. GST included where it applies. You pay only after previewing a submitted statement.

How do we sign it and where does it go?

The PDF has a signature and date line. Print it, sign and date it, scan it in colour, and attach it to your application in ImmiAccount with your other relationship evidence.
