Partner visa forms: what each one is for

Short answer

The partner visa application itself is made online in ImmiAccount, and so is the sponsorship. Alongside it, the Home Affairs visa pages mention several forms: Form 888 (witness statements), Form 80 (personal particulars), Form 1229 (consent for a child), Form 47a, Form 1436 and Forms 956/956A.

Here is what each one is for, with links to the official versions. Which ones apply depends on your situation.

How is a partner visa applied for?

Online. The 820 page says you must apply online and while in Australia; the 309 and 300 pages say online and outside Australia. After the applicant applies, the sponsor applies online in ImmiAccount (“Sponsorship for a Partner to Migrate to Australia”) using the applicant’s Transaction Reference Number.

Which forms come up in a partner visa application?

  • Form 888 – Supporting statement

A statement from a witness aged 18 or over who knows you both and your relationship. The visa pages ask for statements from 2 witnesses.

    Our Form 888 tool
  • Form 80 – Personal particulars for assessment including character assessment

Your detailed history: 10 years of addresses and travel, all employment, education, family and character questions. The 820, 309 and 300 pages say to complete and attach it.

    Form 80 guide
  • Form 1229 – Consent to grant an Australian visa to a child under 18

Consent from a parent or person with parental responsibility who isn't coming to Australia with a child applying with you.

    Form 1229 guide
  • Form 47a – Details of a child or other dependent family member aged 18 years or over

For a dependent child aged 18 or over included in the application.

  • Form 1436 – Adding an additional applicant after lodgement

For adding a dependent child to the application before a decision.

  • Forms 956 and 956A – Appointing an agent or authorised recipient

956 appoints a registered migration agent, legal practitioner or exempt person to help with your application; 956A appoints someone to receive correspondence.

What about statements and statutory declarations?

Besides forms, the 820 and 309 pages ask you to tell Home Affairs in writing about your relationship history: see our relationship statement tool. At stage 2 (801), the sponsor completes a Commonwealth statutory declaration, and some onshore applicants need Commonwealth statutory declarations at stage 1: see when a partner visa needs a statutory declaration.

Questions

Is there a partner visa application form to download?

The 820, 309 and 300 pages say you must apply online, in ImmiAccount. The sponsor also applies online, in ImmiAccount (“Sponsorship for a Partner to Migrate to Australia”), using the applicant's Transaction Reference Number. The forms on this page are the extra documents the visa pages mention.

Are Forms 40SP and 47SP still used?

The current partner visa pages describe online applications and online sponsorship in ImmiAccount, and don't mention Forms 40SP or 47SP. Check the Home Affairs forms page and your visa page before using any paper form.

Where do you download official Home Affairs forms?

From the Department of Home Affairs forms page and the links on each visa page. We link to them; we never host copies, so you always get the current version.

Which forms do we need?

That depends on your situation, and we don't give migration advice. The visa page for your subclass lists what to provide; a registered migration agent or lawyer can advise on your case.
