Partner visa 801 checklist: stage 2 documents
Short answer
For the permanent 801 partner visa, Home Affairs asks for your most recent passport, a Commonwealth statutory declaration from your sponsor, updated relationship evidence including 2 new Form 888 witness statements, proof of your marriage or de facto relationship, and police certificates where they apply.
Send them two years after you applied for the 820, not before. Tick items off below; ticks stay in your browser.

When do you send the 801 documents?
The 820 and 801 are applied for together, and the 801 is the permanent stage. Home Affairs says you are eligible for consideration of the permanent visa two years after you applied, and to not send the stage 2 documents before then. You attach them in ImmiAccount.
What documents does the 801 stage need?
The list follows the “After you apply” steps on the 801 page. Items marked if it applies are only for some couples, such as de facto partners or families with children on the 820.

Checklist: Partner visa 801 (onshore, stage 2)
What is different from the 820 stage?
- The relationship account comes from your sponsor, on a Commonwealth statutory declaration, instead of the written history you gave at stage 1. See the sponsor statutory declaration guide.
- Passport: the pages of your most recent passport showing your photo, personal details, signature, and issue and expiry dates.
- Police certificates: an Australian one only if you didn’t attach one at stage 1, plus overseas ones for countries where you spent 12 months or more since the 820 grant.
- Updated evidence in the same four areas as before: finances, household, social and commitment, covering the time since you applied.
Do you need new Form 888s for the 801?
Yes. Under social matters the 801 page again asks for statements from 2 witnesses on Form 888. Form 888 must be completed by someone who is at least 18 and knows the visa applicant, their partner or fiancé(e), and the history of their relationship. If a witness is an Australian citizen or permanent resident, include evidence of it, such as a passport or birth certificate: see Form 888 ID evidence.
Our Form 888 tool sends each witness a private link; they answer in their own words, and your browser fills in the official form for each of them.
Preparing a different stage?
For the first stage, use the partner visa checklist (820 onshore). Offshore applicants have their own 309 checklist, and engaged couples the Prospective Marriage visa checklist.
